Number Nine Pit
Word on the surface is the canary is still alive. Down a mine that counts as good news, mostly for the canary.
OBJECTIVE
Ride the cage up the shaft and out of Number Nine Pit.
The cage is padlocked, the lever stands outside it, and a very large canary in a helmet stands between you and both. The daylight is the easy part.

THE SHOWRUNNER
Good morning, contestants, and welcome to Number Nine Pit, where the air is thin, the canary is enormous, and the exit is a cage with a padlock and a very firm opinion about who gets to ride it. Your calling is Shot-Firer, so please try not to light anything you cannot personally afford.
HOW THE DAY WENT
| Escaped | 26 % |
|---|---|
| Most-tried move | Persuasion. The canary has turned his back on it, quite literally. |
| Top style | a departed contestant, style 95: “The cage rode up and the padlock gave way. Gaffer Yellowhammer has filed a complaint with himself.” |
THE ROOM REMEMBERS
- The cage gate and padlock now drip with winding-rope grease. Hooks slide right off.
- The coal tub has been rolled to the far end of the rails, chock kicked in tight.
- Every tally on the board now hangs number-side to the wall. The empty hook is still empty.
- Yellowhammer has tipped the coal tub's top layer across the floor. Every step crunches.
- Gaffer Yellowhammer now faces the tally board, counting it aloud, and won't turn for chat.
SCRATCHED INTO THE WALL
